Nigerian comedian Okey Bakassi, Officially Crowned

Nigerian comedian and actor Okey Bakassi, born Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, has been officially crowned as the traditional ruler of the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Mbaise, Imo State. The coronation ceremony, held in early May 2025, was a vibrant celebration of Igbo culture and tradition, attended by community members, cultural groups, and well-wishers from across the state.

During the ceremony, Bakassi was bestowed with the royal title of His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, Okwe II of Umuihuocha Obohia. Dressed in a stunning blue traditional outfit, crowned with a royal cap, and holding the symbolic staff of authority known as Ofor, he pledged to promote unity, peace, and development within his community.

The event featured traditional songs and dances, with men in coordinated brown senator outfits and red Igbo caps, and women adorned in elegant gele headwraps. Videos of the coronation quickly went viral, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Umuihuocha community.

Bakassi’s ascension reflects a growing trend of prominent Nigerian entertainers embracing traditional leadership roles, blending modern influence with cultural preservation.
