Vera Uwaila (Uwa), was found in her own pool of blood. She was found at a branch of the RCCG is located in Benin City, in southern Nigeria. This Church is one of the branches belonging to the Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG). Vera was a 22-year-old university student. She sought a quiet place to study. She found a quiet place in this church. Unfortunately, the church is where she was unfortunately brutally raped and murdered by unknown men.

Sincerely, when this story broke, there was a total shock. The circumstances surrounding Uwa’s death went viral on social media.

The questions arising are more than the answers forth coming.

• Why in a church? A place where people turn to for solace.
• Where people turn to when they have nowhere else to go.
• Why the church? Why this church?
• Are there no cameras in or around this church?

The questions are endless. The pain and the thought of what might have transpired runs chills down my spine. The story of Uwa still breaks me.

Because of the lockdown due to the corona virus , Uwa has been using the church to privately study.

Uwa usually got the church keys from the church pastor. She returned the key once she was through with studying. She didn’t returned the key that “unfaithful day”. The guard found her almost lifeless body and She was rushed to the hospital .

For three days, the doctors fought to save her life to no avail. Uma died in hospital from all the trauma.

A statement from the RCCG church was sent out by its general overseer Pastor Adeboye Enoch. On Sunday may 31st, 2020, pastor Adeboye stated, “All I can do at this time is to pray for the family of Omozuwa and do everything possible working with relevant authorities to bring the perpetrators to book…”

The death of Vera Uwa has led to very many reactions. Protests are seen across Nigeria demanding justice for her death. Reactions on social media demanding for justice for Vera Uwa #JusticeForUwa.
