Derek Chauvin who was earlier fired from the Minneapolis police in relation to the death of George Floyd has been arrested.
His arrest came days after the police officer was caught on video, kneeling on the neck of an arrested man in handcuffs.
The violence and arson in the city of Minneapolis and neighboring St Paul, came as a result of the death of George Floyd.
Chauvin and three of his fellow officers who were at the scene were fired on Tuesday from the Minneapolis Police Department. The officers are known to be Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J Alexander Kueng.
Derek Chauvin is charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. This was announced by Hennepin County Attorney, Mike Freeman on Friday afternoon. This arrest came barely four days after the death of Floyd.
“We entrust our police officers to use a certain amounts of force to do their job, to protect us. They commit a criminal act if they use that force unreasonably”.
Freeman stated, “Charges normally take nine months to a year. This is because prosecutors have a high burden of proof in criminal cases against police officers”.
“But I will not allow us to charge a case before it’s ready,” he said. “And this case is now ready.
